AESCHYLUS II, the second volume in The Modern Library series of THE COMPLETE GREEK TRAGEDIES, originally published by the University of Chicago Press, contains the distinguished translations of Seth G. Benardete and David Grene of The Suppliant Maidens, The Persians and Seven Against Thebes. These translations have received such critical appraisal as:

AESCHYLUS was born in Eleusis in 525 B.C. and died in 456 B.C. His dramatic career began in 499 B.C. when he first exhibited at Athens; his last work, the trilogy of the Oresteia, was exhibited in 458. Of the ninety plays he is believed to have written, seven are extant and fragments remain of more than seventy others. In his brief review of the rise of tragedy in the Poetics (iv. 13), Aristotle names no one before Aeschylus.

DAVID GRENE has lectured in classics at Dublin University and Harvard, and is now Associate Professor of Classical Civilization at the University of Chicago. He is the author of Man in His Pride, a study of Thucydides and Plato as exponents of Greek political theory.

SETH G. BENARDETE is a Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at harvard. He has been Teaching Interne at St. John’s College and has studied in Greece and Italy.
