EURIPIDES was born between 485 and 480 B.C. He presented his first set of tragedies in 445, and won his first o£ four victories in 441. He wrote perhaps eighty-eight plays, of which nineteen survive under his name. He left Athens in 408 for the court of King Archelaus of Macedon, and died there late in 407 or early in 406.

WILLIAM ARROWSMITH is Associate Profes-sor of Classics at the University of Texas. A graduate of Princeton and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes scholar, he has written poems, critical articles, reviews and translations for periodicals, including the Hudson Review, of which he is a founding editor.

CHARLES R. WALKER has written books and articles on a number of social, economic, and literary topics. His avocation recently has been translating Greek tragedies, which he calls "the most modern plays we have,"

EMILY TOWNSEND VERMEULE holds A.B. and Ph.D. degrees from Bryn Mawr College. She has also studied at the American School of Classical Studies, Athens, at St. Anne's college, Oxford, and at Radcliffe.

ELIZABETH WYCKOFF teaches Greek at Mount Holyoke College. She has also taught at Bryn Mawr, Vassar, and Wells. She was trained as a classical scholar at Bryn Mawr, and at Newnham College, Cambridge.
