IT was an intelligent bit of irony which led W.L. George to name this story of the life of an attractive, intelligent courtesan "A Bed of Roses." Here is vividly portrayed the tragedy of fine human nature, betrayed by a matter of economics and the desires of men.

With little exaggeration, it may be said that "A Bed of Roses," is the first English novel in which the soul of a harlot is consciously traced, without either sentimentalism or bias entering into the exposition. To read "A Bed of Roses" is to understand, which is to forgive, but not to forget.
