IBSEN put on the stage men, women, subjects, problems that had never been there before. He made the modern drama; he created a new marvellous technique; he inaugurated a Golden Era of the drama in Europe. There is not an important playright of today who has not been strongly influenced by him. Sudermann, Hauptmann, Maeterlinck, Shaw have all graduated from Ibsen's school. But great as are the talents he has stimulated, the Norwegian giant still stands unrivalled and unapproachable—the loftiest of them all, distinguished by his technique, by the profundity of his thought, by the significance of the problems with which he grapples, and by that something we vaguely call genius which knits together all these qualities into a product of commanding greatness.
