The third novel by Dostoyevsky to be included in the Modern Library (the other two are The Brothers Karamazov, No. 151 and Crime and Punishment, No. 199), The Possessed has the distinction of appearing as a first American edition, in that it contains a hitherto-suppressed chapter. Avrahm Yarmolinsky, who provides a foreword and the translation of the newly discovered chapter, explains the political reasons for the suppression and the manner in which the original was released from the Russian archives.
