Notes on Carroll's Illustrated Alice:
The cover on the left is the more common of the two. Only one copy of the one on the right has been reported. At first, collectors thought that the book on the right was actually one of the volumes in another Random House two-volume boxed gift set because the illustrated label is the same; but a clear picture of the book showing the front panel and spine confirms that this is indeed a variation of the Modern Library illustrated edition. Barry Neavill suspects that ML borrowed the labels from the gift set when they ran out of preprinted full page cover illustrations. The Illustrated Alice is a constant source of fascination for Modern Library collectors. For detailed information and lots of photographs, see Alice as Phantom and How Scarce is The Alice Anyway? |
