Notes on Maupassant's Short|Best Stories Modern Library published collections of Maupassant's short stories in three versions. The first two versions had the same tales and same introduction but changed names — first as Short Stories (1932) and later as Best Stories (1940). The third version retained the name Best Stories (1945) but had a different introduction and a different selection of stories. The first collection of stories (98.2 and 98.3) are a combination of Love and Other Stories and Mademoiselle Fifi and Twelve Other Stories. When Short Stories appeared in 1932 both Love and Fifi were removed from the catalog. To further complicate things, known dust jackets of all three versions all show the title as Best Stories.
