Notes on Pennell's The Art of Whistler Because of the method used in printing the book blocks, several printings beyond the genuine first included the first statement. In a note to the ML mailing list on April 27 2007, Barry Neavill had this to say about the title: "The Art of Whistler was a ML original. Cerf invited Mrs. Pennell to compile the book for the ML and subsequently lost the manuscript after it was submitted. He wiggled out of telling Mrs. Pennell by tossing a coin with Klopfer to determine who would convey the news. Klopfer lost, but Mrs. Pennell had another copy so the ML was able to publish the book on schedule. "The illustrations and the 'aquatone process' made it an expensive book to produce. The printed sheets cost nearly 30 cents a copy, compared to nearly 20 cents a copy for the longer volume Lives of the Twelve Caesars. In 1928 Klopfer told the British publisher Allen Lane, who later founded Penguin Books, that the ML lost money on The Art of Whistler, 'but as we don't sell very many it doesn't make much difference.'
